Il Campione del Mondo Snipe 2009 risponde alle domande del nostro sito.

Bruno Bethlem, assieme a Dante Bianchi, è stato il vero dominatore del Mondiale, disputatosi a San Diego nello scorso settembre. Nelle undici regate disputate l'equipaggio brasiliano ha dimostrato una regolarità impressionante (togliendo gli scarti: quattro primi, un secondo, tre terzi, un quarto e un quinto), distanziando, alla fine, di molti punti il secondo arrivato.
Bruno è un tipo molto tranquillo e riservato, lontano dallo stereotipo di brasiliano espansivo e casinista. Ha risposto senza farsi attendere alle domande che gli abbiamo posto, non senza averci prima confidato di voler iniziare i corsi di lingua italiana.

Snipe.it: Ciao Bruno. Puoi raccontarci come ti sei preparato per i Mondiali?

Bruno Betthlem: Non mi sono allenato molto per i Mondiali quest'anno. Il mio tempo libero non coincide sempre con quello di Dante. Così abbiamo puntato a sviluppare le vele e a fare le principali regate. Ci aspettavamo venti più leggeri. Ma non ci siamo molto preoccupati di questo. Abbiamo perso quasi 15 kg assieme. Penso che questo sia stato il nostro maggiore sforzo.

Snipe.it: Vi siete allenati con altri equipaggi brasiliani?

Bruno: Ci sono molti snipisti nel mio club che stanno sempre in mare, ma non abbiamo avuto molto tempo a disposizione per navigare con loro. Per lo più li incontro in acqua durante le regate principali.

Snipe.it: Da quanto tempo regati in Snipe e da quanto tempo vai in barca con Dante?

Bruno: Vado in Snipe dal 1996 e questo era il mio quarto Mondiale. Dante naviga con me dal 2000, sebbene per un paio d'anni non siamo stati in barca assieme (2003-2005). Per la maggior parte del tempo Dante è con me. Quando  lui non può esserci, chiamo un altro amico per sostituirlo. Dante è incredibile. Non è solo il mio prodiere, ma siamo anche grandi amici ed ogni cosa mi sembra bella quando è con me.

Snipe.it: Regati solo in Snipe o vai anche su altre barche?

Bruno: Una vola andavo in 470 e in 49er ma ho abbandonato. La campagna olimpica è troppo costosa. Ma ancora vado su barche grandi a chiglia. Penso che la cosa più importante sia andare in barca, non importa che barca sia, e pianificare il calendario per le regate più importanti.

Snipe.it: Hai un allenatore e ne avevi uno (o un esperto locale) a San Diego?

Bruno: Non ho mai avuto un allenatore per lo Snipe. Forse una o due volte durante qualche campionato. E non avevamo un allenatore a San Diego. Noi stessi abbiamo badato ad ogni cosa.

Snipe.it: Parliamo di materiali? Hai utilizzato a San Diego un Persson/Db Marine costruito da Enrico Michel. Puoi dirci qualcosa di questa barca?

Bruno: La barca era perfetta. Rigida, ben costruita e veramente veloce (la cosa più importante). Non mi posso lamentare della barca. Ogni cosa funzionava perfettamente.

Snipe.it: Utilizzi vele Zaoli. Puoi parlarci della collaborazione che hai con questa veleria?

Bruno: Il nostro lavoro con Zaoli è stato molto buono. Credo che abbiamo raggiunto tutti gli obiettivi. Il Team Zaoli è impressionante e noi abbiamo sviluppato assieme a loro vele molto veloci.

Snipe.it: Domanda a bruciapelo: tuning o boathandling? Cos'è più importante?

Bruno: Penso che siano entrambi importanti? Questi fattori lavorano assieme.

Snipe.it "Numeri segreti"?

Bruno: Le mie regolazioni sono come una ricetta di un dolce. E a San Diego non è stato differente. I numeri sono solo dei riferimenti. E' più importante giocare con loro. Non puoi diventare nevrotico per colpa loro.

Snipe.it: Qual è stato il fattore più importante della vittoria ai Mondiali?

Bruno: Sono stati tre: velocità, tranquillità e pazienza.

Snipe.it: Hai una persona al quale dedicare la tua vittoria ai Mondiali?

Bruno: Sì. La dedico a Dante.

Snipe.it: Quest'anno eri a Cervia per il Piada Trophy (che hai vinto). Cosa pensi della Classe Snipe in Italia? Cosa differisce dallo Snipe in Brasile?

Bruno: Credo che la Classe in Italia si molto forte. Penso che la più grande differenza sia che noi abbiamo equipaggi più giovani, questo perché qui non abbiamo molte scelte come in Europa (470, 49er, 29er, etc.).

Snipe.it. Quali sono i tuoi programmi per il futuro?

Bruno: Continuerò ad andare in Snipe per il resto della mia vita e voglio difendere il titolo in Danimarca. Ma mi piacerebbe iniziare a navigare con la Star. Questo dovrebbe essere il mio progetto velistico per il futuro.

Bruno: Prego, sarà sempre un piacere! Spero di essere a Cervia il prossimo anno e divertirmi con tutti voi.

How did you prepare for the Worlds? Did you train a lot and where? Wich type of preparation did you do? Did you train (or test sails) specficially for the light wind conditions expected in San Diego? Did you sail and train with other brazilian teams?

We didn't train too much this year for the worlds. My free time doesn't match with Dante's free time. So our aim was to develop the sails and go to the main regattas. We were expecting lighter winds. But we were not worry about that. We've lost almost 15kg togheter. I think that it was our biggest effort. We have many Snipe sailors in my club that are all the time in the water. But I don't have enough free time to sail with them. I mostly meet them in the water during the main ragattas.


How many years have you sail the Snipe? How long have you sail with Dante?Did you sail with Dante or also with other crew? What do you think about Dante?

I have been sailing snipe since 1996 and that was my 4th worlds. Dante is sailing with me since 2000 altough we have given up for a couple of years (2003-2005). Most of the time Dante is with me. When he can not be there with me I call another friend to replace him. Dante is awsome. He is not only my crew. We are big friends and everything seems to be good when he is around.


Did you sail only Snipe or also others boats? Do you think that sailing with other type of boats helps you or is not helpful?

I used to sail 470 and 49er but I've given up. The Olimpyc campaign is too expensive. But I still sail big keel boat in Brazil. I think that the most important thing is to keep sailing no matter the boat you are and plan the scheadule for the most important events.

Do you have a coach and did youy have a coach or a local expert in San Diego?

I've never had a coach in Snipe. Maybe once or twice during some championships. And we didn't have a coach in San Diego. Everything was by ourself.

Did you use in San Diego a Persson/Db Marine built by Enrico Michel? Can you tell us something about this snipe?
You sail with Zaoli Sails. Did you develop new sails for the Worlds? How is your feedback with Zaoli?

The boat was perfect. Stiff, beautifull, well done and really fast (the most important). I have no complains about the boat. Everything was working nicely. Our job in Zaoli was very good. I think we reached all the targets. The Zaoli team is impressive and we we've developed very fast sails togheter.

Tuning or boathandling? Which is more important?

I think that both are important. These factors work togheter.

"Secret numbers"?

My set up is a cake recipe. And in San Diego was not different. The numbers are just references. It is very important to play with them. You can not be neurotic about it.

Spreaders: 42,5cm / 74cm
Mast step: 59"-60".

Which was the most important factor for the victory of the Worlds?

These were three. Speed, tranquility and patience.

Do you have a person to whom dedicated your victory at the Worlds?

Yes I do. To Dante.

This year you were in Cervia for Piada (and you won). What do you think about Snipe Class in Italy? How is it similar and how is it different from the Snipe Class in Brasil?

I think that the Class in Italy is very strong. I think that the biggest difference is that we have younger crews here because we don't have to many options like in Europe (470, 49er, 29er, etc).

Your program for the future (Snipe, sailing in general ... your life ...?

I will keep sailing Snipe for the rest of my life and we want to defend the title in Denmark. But I would like to start sailing Star Class. It should be my plan for the future on sailing.
