Il commento americano alle regate di Cervia.
Il Prada Trophy?
No, questo è il P-I-A-D-A Trophy.
Assomiglia e suona simile a Prada, ma paragonato ai soldi spesi da Prada racing nell’America’s Cup, vi possiamo assicurare che l’annuale Piada Trophy è un affare di gran lunga migliore per i vostri denari. Nessuna qualificazione, grandi regate, “rockstars” internazionali della vela, ben pochi paparazzi, e i velisti hanno un divertimento maggiore.
L’edizione 2009 del Piada Trophy, organizzata dall’illustre Team Piada, è stata una volta ancora un successo. Quest’anno 60 barche provenienti da 11 Paesi hanno partecipato a sei prove nell’arco di tre giorni. Il contingente internazionale è stato ancora più numeroso quest’anno poiché l’evento coincideva con il Mondiale Master che si sarebbe tenuto la settimana successiva a Trieste.
Durante la regata di Cervia è stato prevalente il vento leggero. Se siete tra coloro che non amano cinghiare, il Piada è l’evento per voi. Lasciate i vostri pantaloni steccati e le mute di neoprene a casa e mettete in valigia il vostro bikini o il costume. Ma non dimenticate la crema solare! Pietro Fantoni (ITA) è stato molto furbo e uno dei più veloci in mare. Avendo fatto tesoro dell’esperienza, Pietro si è presentato quest’anno con la prodiera “rockstar” italiana Marinella Gorgatto, e i due si libravano sopra il campo di regata con i loro 115 chili.
Il peso non è stato un ostacolo al successo per Roberto Paradeda ed il suo skipper Bruno Bethlem (BRA), che hanno camminato costantemente veloci (e nella giusta direzione), vincendo metà delle prove. Al secondo posto, Augie Diaz e Kathleen Tocke (USA) hanno trovato la giusta forma nella seconda parte della regata, vincendo due prove. L’equipaggio Lambertenghi/Bari (ITA), una dei più regolari, ha concluso al terzo posto. Manu Hens (BEL) ha mostrato una “fiammeggiante” velocità di poppa, mentre Jordi Triay (ESP) e Max Van Pelt (BEL) hanno fatto vedere una buona velocità lungo il percorso. Ma la velocità sul campo di regata è solo metà della battaglia al Piada Trophy.
Dove conta la vera velocità è il circuito dei Go-Kart Happy Valley. Questi non sono go-karts per nonnetti, queste sono vere macchine da corsa! Disputate le batterie di qualifica, i piloti più veloci sono stati divisi in Gold e Silver Fleet. Francesco Perdisa (ITA) è stato il vincitore, battendo il campione dello scorso anno, Fabio “Rocket” Rochelli (ITA). Un’altra performance degna di nota è stata quella di Bruno Bethlem, che dopo una deludente prestazione l’anno scorso (non si era nemmeno qualificato per la silver fleet), si è preso una pausa dagli allenamenti in Snipe per allenarsi sul go-kart in Brasile. Il suo sforzo ha pagato, guadagnando un posto nella gold fleet – congratulazioni Bruno.
Ancora, il Piada non è solo competizione. I rinfreschi e le cene del dopo-regata sono sempre eccezionali. E il Piada Bingo annichilisce anche le più celebrate star del bingo (nessuna delle quali era presente). Se non ci sono ancora abbastanza cose da fare per riempire le vostra agende di regatanti, allora raggiungete i giovani equipaggi e coloro che sono giovani nel cuore per danzare nelle strade fino alle ore piccole della mattina, sfruttando le caldi notti estive italiane.
Il prossimo anno unitevi a noi per il Piada, prenotate la vostre barche charter in anticipo, esercitatevi con il go-kart e tenetevi pronti per uno dei migliori eventi dell’anno ...

The Prada Trophy? No, that’s P-I-A-D-A Trophy.
It looks and sounds like Prada, but compared to money spent on Prada racing in the America’s Cup, we can assure you that annual Piada Trophy is a much better bang for your buck. No qualifiers, great sailboat racing, international sailing rockstars, far fewer paparazzi, and the sailors have a better time.
The 2009 Piada Trophy, organized by Italy’s illustrious Team Piada was once again a success. This year, 60boats, from 11 countries participated in six races over three days. The international contingent was even larger this year due to the event coinciding with the Master’s World Championship held the following week in Trieste, Italy.
Light winds prevailed in Cervia for the event. For those of you who don’t like to hike, Piada is the event for you. Leave your hiking pants and neoprene at home, and pack your bikini or euro Speedo. Don’t forget your sunscreen! Pietro Fantoni (ITA) was the wisest and one of the fastest boats on the course. Having learned from experience, Pietro showed up this year, with Italian rockstar crew, Marinella Gorgatto, and the two of them soared around the race course at 115 kilos.
Weight was no barrier to success for Roberto Paradeda and his skipper, Bruno Bethlem (BRA) who sailed consistently fast (and in the right direction), winning half of the races. Second place finishers, Augie Diaz and Kathleen Tocke (USA), found their groove the second half of the regatta winning two races. Team Lambertenghi/Bari (ITA), one of the most consistent boats on the course, finished third. Manu Hens (BEL) showed blazing speed off the wind, while Jordi Triay (ESP) and Max Van Pelt (BEL) also displayed good speed around course.
Speed on the race course is only half the battle at the Piada Trophy. The Happy Valley Go-Kart track is where the real speed counts. These are not your grandparents’ go-karts - these are serious racing machines! Following qualifying heats, the fastest racers were split into Gold and Silver Fleets. Francesco Perdisa (ITA) was victorious over last year’s winner, Fabio (Rocket) Rochelli (ITA). Another notable performance at the track was that of Bruno Bethlem, who after a very disappointing performance in last year’s races (he didn’t even qualify for the silver fleet), took some time off from his Snipe training schedule to practice go-karting in Brazil. His efforts paid off, earning him a spot in the Gold Fleet – congrats Bruno!
Still, Piada is not all about racing, the post-race refreshments and dinners of local wine and cuisine are always exceptional, and Piada Bingo stumps even the most celebrated bingo stars (non of whom were in attendance). If that’s still not enough activity to fill your regatta agenda, then join the young crews and those young at heart, who could be found taking advantage of the warm Italian summer nights, dancing in the streets until the wee hours of the morning.
