Il Segretario Sud europeo (a destra,  nella foto qui a fianco, con Paolo Lambertenghi, Thierry den Hartigh e Bojan Grego - dopo qualche bottiglia le espressioni sono piuttosto buffe ...) parla dello Snipe in Croazia e nel Sud Europa.

Lo Snipe negli ultimi anni ha cominciato una nuova vita in Croazia. Puoi dirci quanto importante è stata la classe in passato nel tuo Paese?

Lo Snipe ha sempre avuto un grande significato in Croazia. Per anni è stata la classe più numerosa e frequentata, sulla quale generazioni e generazioni di velisti sono cresciute. Oggi è quasi impossibile parlare con i vecchi velisti senza che ricordino con piacere i loro giorni con lo Snipe e la Classe stessa. Inoltre non solo è stata una classe numerosa, ma anche di grande successo. Tra i molti ottimi risultati posso ricordare il primo posto di Grego - Nokolic agli Europei del '66, poi il secondo nel '64 e '68 e il secondo ai Mondiali del '67. Inoltre il secondo agli Europei del '70 di Ivancic - Sirola. Molti Snipisti ricorderanno anche la famosa Coppa Barbanera dove abbiamo avuto molto successo, e così via.
Quando si tiene conto di tutto ciò, è ovvio ciò che lo Snipe rappresentava una volta e quanto è importante rivitalizzare la Classe ora.

Com'è la situazione delle derive in Croazia?

Penso che da un lato le situazione è molto buona se consideriamo i risultati che stiamo ottenendo specialmente nelle Classi  olimpiche e quando questi risultati sono comparati con il numero relativamente piccolo di velisti.
D'altra parte c'è una grande concertazione di velisti sui singoli, mentre i doppi sono quasi completamente ignorati.
Per quanto ho capito la popolarità dei doppi sarà una delle principali priorità della Federazione croata della vela ed è lì dove vedo una buona opportunità per rendere la Classe Snipe popolare in Croazia. Specialmente tra i giovani velisti.

Puoi spiegarci le vostre strategie per sviluppare la Classe in Croazia?

Come ho detto, in passato la Classe era estremamente popolare e di successo e ciò costituisce una buona base per lo sviluppo. Direi che solo i presenti problemi economici oggi sono stati di resistenza ad una crescita più veloce, ma non c'è dubbio che la crescita della Classe in Croazia sarà continua e stabile. Per ora lo sviluppo è per lo più incentrato sui velisti che sono già stati nel passato familiari alla Classe e a cui piace ancora regatare in Snipe. Comunque dobbiamo portare la Classe Snipe verso i giovani velisti e questa è la sola giusta rotta per lo sviluppo e la salute della Classe a lungo termine.
Parlando in generale, penso che la Classe Snipe sia diventata o sia considerata più come una barca per "vecchi". Questo concetto in futuro dovrebbe essere cambiato a livello mondiale. Se ci occupiamo della crescita della Classe in Croazia faremo un buon lavoro, ma se ci occupiamo di espanderla parallelamente tra i giovani velisti, allora faremo un lavoro eccellente.

Quali sono le differenze e i punti di contatto tra la Croazia e l'Italia?

La Croazia e l'Italia hanno lo stesso clima e una mentalità molto simile, perciò penso che ci si capisca bene in tutti i campi così come nella vela. Non credo ci siano molte differenze tra di noi. Personalmente mi diverto a bazzicare e ad andare in barca con i miei amici Italiani, specialmente con i miei amici della zona di Trieste e Muggia.

Cosa pensi della situazione della Classe in Europa e particolarmente nel Sud Europa?

Dal momento che regato in Snipe da solo cinque anni, è difficile per me dare una valutazione della situazioni in Europa. Credo che la Classe sia organizzata molto bene sia a a livello europeo che mondiale, ma direi che ciò è normale e scontato per una Classe con una così lunga e ricca tradizione.
In ogni caso ho già menzionato che è evidente l'assenza di giovani velisti, eccetto forse per la Spagna che chiaramente è più avanti degli altri. Sarebbe interessante vedere le loro strategie di sviluppo, trarre qualche lezione e provare ad applicarle.
Il Sud Europa è una parte estremamente importante per la Snipe family, nella quale ci sono due grandi flotte su quattro. L'Italia e la Spagna dovrebbero essere i leaders e i principali promotori della Classe in questa regione e dare al Sud Europa un'importanza molto più grande di quanto, credo, ne abbia ora. Qui per lo più mi riferisco al Campionato del Sud Europa che, per il momento, vedo non rappresenta una regata di grande importanza. Per questo sono molto contento che, come sembra, quest'anno ci siano più candidature che in precedenza. 

Puoi dirci quali sono i tuoi programmi e le tue idee come Segretario Sud europeo?

Il mio ruolo consiste principalmente nell'assistere il Segretario europeo in materia di Sud Europa e Campionato Sud europeo. In rapporto a ciò mi piacerebbe, e ci proverò, aumentare l'importanza del Sud Europa e portare il Campionato Sud europeo ad un più alto livello. Sarebbe bello avere una continua rotazione del campionato tra tutti i paesi del Sud Europa. Un migliore rapporto tra i membri e l'importanza del Campionato Sud europeo come competizione centrale nella regione saranno i miei principali compiti.

Ricordaci il Calendario di regate del 2011 in Croatia

La Croazia avrà quattro regate quest'anno:

-Proljetni Kup Galeba – YC Galeb - Kostrena - 12-13/3/11

-Snipe Open - YC Uljanik Plavidba - Pula - 30/4-1/5/11

-SIPAR 2011 - YC Orion - Moscenicka Draga - 20-22/5/11

-Kvarner Cup (Croatian Nationals) - YC Pesja - Omisalj - 8-10/7/11.

- In the last years a new life began for the Snipe class in Croatia. Can you tell us how important was the class in the past and now in your country?

Snipe always had a big significance in Croatia. For years this was the most numerous and frequent class on which generations and generations of sailors where raised. Today it is almost impossible to speak with older sailors who will not gladly remember their days in Snipe or the Class itself. Also not only that it was the most numerous but also a very successful class. Among many great results I can remember Grego-Nikolic 1st place at Europeans 66, then 2nd in 64 & 68 and 2nd at worlds in 76, Ivancic-Sirola 2nd at 70’ Europeans. Many Snipe sailors will also remember the famous Barbanera where we have been very successful, and so on.
When all of this is taken into consideration it is obvious what Snipe once represented and how the revitalization of the Class is important.

- How is the situation in Croatia about the small boats (dinghy)?

I think that in one hand the situation is very good if we take a look the results we are achieving, especially in Olympic classes and when those results are compared with the relatively little number of sailors.
On the other hand there is way to big concentration of the sailors in single crew boats while multi crew boats are almost completely ignored.
As I understood the popularisation of two person boats will be one the main priorities of the Croatian Sailing Federation, and there is where I also see a good opportunity for further popularisation of the Snipe Class in Croatia; especially within the youth sailors.

- Can you explain your strategy for developing the class in Croatia?

As I had already mentioned, in the past the Class was extremely popular and successful which give us a good base for development. I would say that only the present financial troubles people today have stand in the way of faster growth, but there is no doubt that the Class in Croatia will continuously and steadily grow. For now the development is mostly focused on sailors that are already familiar with class from the past and would like to sail Snipe again. However we must bring Snipe Class to youth sailors as that is the only proper way to develop Class on long-term and healthy basis.
Generally speaking I think that Snipe Class has become or is considered more like boat for “older” which should be changed on the world level in the future. If we manage to grow the Class in Croatia we will make a good job, but if we manage to parallel expand it to youth sailors we will do excellent job.

- Which are the difference and the points of contact between Croatia and Italy?

Croatia and Italy take part of the same climate and a very similar mentality and therefore I think we understand each other well in all subjects and so in sailing as well. I don’t think there are much differences between us. Personally I enjoy hanging out and sailing with my Italian friends, especially my friends from Trieste & Muggia region.

- What do you think about the situation of the class in Europe and particularly in South Europe?

As I have been sailing Snipe only some five years now; it is difficult for me to dentally evaluate the situation in Europe. I think that Class is very well organised as on European so on World level, but I would say that this is normal and expected from a Class with such long and wealthy tradition.
However as I already mentioned it is obvious the lack of youth sailors, except maybe Spain which is clearly ahead of others. It would be interesting to see their strategy of development; draw some lessons and try to apply them.
South Europe is extremely important part of Snipe family from where two out of four biggest fleets are coming. Italy and Spain should be the leaders and main developers of the Class in this region, and give South Europe much greater importance as I think she’s having now. Here I mostly refer to South European Championship which at this moment as I see it does not represent a regatta of great importance. Because of this I’m very happy as it seems that this year will have more bids than previously.

- Can you tell us your program or your ideas as South European Secretary?

My role is primarily to assist European Secretary in the terms of South Europe and South European Championship. In that respect I would like and will try that we bring the importance of South Europe and SE Championship to a higher level. It would be great to have a continuous rotation of the championship among all SE countries. Better connections between the members and the importance of the SE Championship as the central competition in the region will be my main tasks.

- Remember us the 2011 racing schedule in Croatia

Croatia will have four regattas this year:
