Campionati Nordici Open
Data pubblicazione: 31/07/2006

Prima giornata:

Pori, 28 luglio 2006. Vento leggero da Nord. Iscritti Poggi - Boccato, Rodati - Bonini, Rochelli - Rochelli e Olivieri - Pederiva.

ROQETTE ROCKETS TO THE TOP

After a long windless morning, the breeze arrived in Pori. Starting the first race of the day at 14:15, the efficient race committee managed to cram three full-length races into the afternoon, starting the third race at 16:59 just a whisker before the deadline at 17 hrs. The northwesterly wind of 6 to 8 m/s kicked up a nasty chop, which seemed to be to Belgian taste. The gang from Antwerp had three places in the top seven in the final race, and is now fighting the Norwegians tooth and nails for the dominance of the proceedings. Without their OCS, Bart Boman and Jill Ponet would be way ahead in points.

Bart Bomans, how can a small snipe country like Belgium do so well, all of a sudden? – Well, we race and train a lot together, and push ourselves to be better. Our mixed crews are light and agile. In my boat, I have two secret weapons. One is my Finnish suit of sails from WB, which I have helped to develop. The other is my crew Jill, who has Olympic experience from the Europe class, and calls our tactical shots. – Don’t forget the famous Belgian beer, it also helps a lot, mentions his countryman.

Still, at the top of the leaderboard is neither a Belgian nor a Norwegian, but a solitary Portuguese by the name of Tiago Roquette. His series of 10-3-8-10 is the most consistent one in the field so far, which gives an idea of the varying conditions during two days of shifty northwesterlies and hidden riverine eddy currents. Tiago certainly has the Snipe credentials to go, as his father Pedro was a fixture on the Snipe championship circuit for decades. Another impressive performance was given by the Russia snipe sailor Eduard Skornikov, who rounded the weather mark first in two races, and only slowly lost ground to the surfing Belgians and Spaniards on the reaches. Watch him (and Bomans) rise in the standings after the fifth race, when one discard is allowed.

Overall, the open Nordic championship does not look terribly Nordic. The Norwegian Vikings are doing well in third, fifth and sixth place. But the best Finnish place is 11^th, secured by the female team of Andrea Borenius and Charlotta Renvall. The Swedes represented by Robert Winther are in 13^th place, the solitary Dane Christian Skjoldvang in 18^th place. The two final races on Sunday will give the Nordics their final possibility to rise in the overall standings.

Terzo giornata, risultati finali:

Pori, 30 luglio 2006. Poggi - Boccato vincono in acqua.

The final day for the Nordics started out with a easterly breeze from the shoreline, making it quite shifty, but keeping the water flat. The race committee had set a windward-leeward course. The start was quite crowded, leading to individual recalls, not all of which were answered. Some boats, among them yesterday’s leader Roquette, were several minutes late for the start. Gianpiero Poggi took an early lead, showing good roll tacking skill, and stretched out downwind. On the final stretch home, the Grödem brothers from Norway overtook him for a victory, dropping Poggi narrowly into second slot. However, an earlier yellow flagging had forced Poggi to take a penalty, which was not absolved fully, leading to a later disqualification. Sandvig, Campos and Kuzmin took the following slots.

Then the wind fizzled out for a while, and the race committee wisely decided to postpone the start. The awaited sea breeze from the north-west soon picked up, and the final start got going. The first try was a complete shambles as the pin end was set way too low, but after adjustments the fleet got clean away. Again it was Poggi in the forefront, showing tremendous speed in the medium airs, followed by the Finnish all-girl team Borenius & Renvall. As the wind picked up, the strong hikers able to carry more power in the rig to cut through the chop, ate up the distance to the leaders. Jordi Triay from Menorca finally passed Poggi, while Rochelli rose to third and Grödem to fourth. As only two races were scheduled, the Championship was over and done with early in the afternoon.

The preliminary results showed Grödem on top without a discard, and Poggi winning with a discard. But the protest hearing caused the abovementioned DSQ for Poggi, whereupon the victory on total points surprisingly went to Jordi Triay and Jose Escudero from the Baleares in the sunny Mediterranean. Norwegians Grödem and Sandvig were second and third on the final podium. Best mixed team was Bart Bomans – Jill Ponet in fourth and best all-girl crew Andrea Borenius – Charlotta Renvall in tenth place.

The scene is now set for the European Championships, with the first races on Tuesday. The Norwegian team has clearly shown its strength. The Belgians and Russians get our votes for ‘most improved team’. As the majority of the Spanish and Italian teams have mainly been cruising around in practice mode, we can expect the usual strong showing from these large Snipe countries. Stay tuned on this channel for more late-breaking news.
